The Bank of the Lao began its partnership with Soramitsu in October 2021. However, the PDR has yet to determine if it will issue a CBDC. The research is set to explore a multi-currency, wholesale pathway as well. In 2023, Laos began developing and testing a proof-of-concept with Soramitsu. During this pilot, the Bank of the Lao PDR issues a CBDC to a temporary commercial bank that then distributes it to individual users to test the payment method at participating retail outlets.
